Of course, when your doctor is Dr. Bob, life isn't necessarily routine. But it was pretty normal this time, with one of (as [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise calls them) the "baby doctors" taking the history and such.

I've been informed that I really need to lose weight. This isn't a revelation.

And the solution is simple. Eat less and exercise more.

It's the execution that's the problem.

But I have ideas.

Eat less? Exercise more? Wow, what a novel concept! *laugh* If only it were that easy...*sigh*

A TV in front of the treadmill was the key to my last consistant bout of exercise. I must have seen six seasons of 'ER' while coated in sweat. But now that TV has gone to college with Rob, and I'm not sure I want to buy another right at the moment. Flat panel prices are (IMHO) about to hit free fall, and I'd love to replace the living room TV with something nicer....geek envy, I've got geek envy.

I just watch everything in 'fat' mode. I makes the typical actor/actress look like a normal Michigander.

Oh ho, I know that concept. *says she who had a really good work, out at the gym today, then blew it as soon as she walked in the door...*

*G*

*hug* I know it's hard to do.

Eat Less and Exercise More

I'd like to claim virtue on my part, but can't - I was down to the low 200s when I got employed again, and then jumped all the way back to 235 in a year. Exercise and eating less has generally been helping me to get back to the low 200s again, but I'm not sure that taking 8 months to lose 25 pounds is anything to brag about.

Still, the only thing that's ever worked for me to take weight off is significant chunks of exercise. 30 to 60 minutes per day, minimum. I'm not back up to the level yet, but work has finally stabilized (and will get even quieter when summer rolls in), so more time will come available for exercise. With luck I'll punch thru 200 pounds some time this summer. I doubt I've been less than 200 in fifteen years, so it'll feel like an accomplishment. If only I can keep it up.

And no, I'm not going to keep everyone posting. Lord, nothing is more boring that talking about diets.

You're not alone here. Many of us SF/computer types are sedentary, and I'm no exception. I've been trying to get rid of my spare tire, but somehow it keeps finding its way back to me.

Let the race begin. :)

He keeps telling me the same thing...

AND he made me quit smoking, which does NOT help with the weightloss.

The year before my first daughter was born, I dropped about 60 pounds in response to Bobs threat to start carving off body parts when the inevitable diabetes took it's toll. Fathering two kids has put about 40 of it back on, but one of the methods that helped me during the dedicated weight loss was to establish a morning calesthenics regimen - one so easy it would be embarassing to skip it. So i started with 10 lousy pushups, 10 situps, 10 leg lifts, and 10 crunches. a routine that took a whopping 5 minutes. After a week i added 5 reps to each exercise. one more week 5 more reps.even at the point where i had worked up to 40 reps of each, I was still cranking it out in less than 10 minutes. If adding 5 each week creates a strain, add 1 or 2 reps each week. Minutes a day, progressively increasing amounts of exercise, very little time and no equipment. Not too many excuses to not try it. In fact, i'll make you a deal - if you start the routine, i'll jump back into it myself, and by the time Windy comes back around, you and i can pick on Bob for how much weight HE'S put on, while we strut our (relatively) taught abs on stage.

Even if it doesn't accelerate weight loss, the exercises in question Do build/tone muscle in critical places - muscle which will act as a fat furnace. Whaddya say? See which one of us gets to 50 reps per day first?

First, congrats on keeping up the workouts! I wanna sell tickets when you two do the walk of fame. And if you bring my husband with you, I'll be eternally grateful

As a nursing student now, I've seen the tail end of what Dr. Bob was warning you about. Suffice it to say, w/ diabetes - sometimes you don't have to carve out the parts. They just ...

...I hope you get the idea. Unfortunately, I've got *lots* of mental - and other - pictures.

So, keep crunching and munching (the healthy, bulky stuff, that is).

Yup, the exercise works for me too, I managed to drop two and a half stone (35 pounds) last year. Without space for any equipment at home I used the "Hackers Diet", which seemed appropriate given my profession. I gave it up over the winter but have started again now since I want to loose another 10 pounds or so.

The online book about the diet is here:
