We had a relatively relaxed Thanksgiving here, with everyone participating in one way or another in preparing the dinner. Ruby the Dog was happy to get snivels of turkey that were passed to her by cooperating children and adults, because (as Ruby is happy to remind us) turkey is a dog's perfect food. As is, apparently, beef, chicken, cheese, leftover milk from cereal, spilled coffee with cream, and whatever is left in our chili bowl, among other things. Happily, Ruby has a robust digestion.

Tomorrow, K and I are off to the last Chambanacon. We will see some of you there!

We had a lovely Thanksgiving Day here. It was relaxed.

I made myself a lovely atraditional Reuben sandwich for lunch. I love a good Reuben, but ordering them in a restaurant involves putting the waiter through an inquisition, as I have to find out whether or not the sauerkraut contains sulfites. That's usually more trouble than it's worth. But we had assembled the ingredients yesterday, so the Reuben was in order today.

Dinner was turkey breast, mashed potatoes, corn pudding, pecan apple cornbread stuffing, and cranberry orange relish, plus some nice nine-grain bread that I found at the store. Julie had made bread earlier in the day, but very little of it was left by dinner time. I can't imagine how that happened. :)

After dinner, we played Exploding Unicorns, which was very silly.

It was a good way to spend the day.

Time Off

And look! I have four days off of work in a row. I am greatly looking forward to this. :)

This afternoon, I went to the grocery store and picked up more stuff that we needed around the house, including deli meat for tomorrow's lunch. Prices are sharply higher, which is not a surprise, but which makes me sad. The summer sausage that Gretchen likes is up from $8.99 to $10.99 a pound across only a few months. The Krakus ham is up substantially, although I'm not sure by exactly how much; corned beef and Swiss cheese have also vaulted up in cost.

I ended up spending more today than I did yesterday when I picked up the turkey and other things for Thanksgiving dinner. Of course, I also decided that it was an opportune time to fill in some holes in the pantry and that *will* bulk up the bill.

In any case, I hope that you all (in the U.S.) have a wonderful Thanksgiving. And if you are elsewhere, I hope you have a lovely weekend as soon as you get to it. :)

I intend to start enjoying mine now.

It was a very peaceful Thanksgiving with just the immediate family present. Dinner was kept relatively simple. This was good, because we managed to get past the complications when the meat thermometer failed (and the analog backup was pressed into service) and the food processor went missing (and Gretchen ended up chopping fresh cranberries by hand for the cranberry-orange relish). We're *still* trying to figure out where the food processor is. Gretchen swears that it must have been unpacked already, but the boxes in the library are busily laughing at me with nearly unrestrained glee. But it's got to be here *somewhere*.

Tomorrow, it's off to Chambanacon, which will be my fifth (and final) in-person convention of the year. All things considered, that's a lot of cons!

Progress

Made some good progress at work today, so when I come back next week after Thanksgiving, I should be able to roll forward the rest of the changes that I need to make in fairly short order and get on with further progress on the current task. (This is good, because I had been in wheel-spinning mode for a bit, which can happen when you're doing a major code refactoring. And it gets tiresome...)

Good progress at home too, as I gave Gretchen some minor assistance in baking the pumpkin pie for tomorrow's Thanksgiving dinner. This frees up the oven for the turkey breast which will be the main course. We'll still have to do some games around the stuffing and corn pudding, but pumpkin pie is just a roadblock on the pathway to the rest of dinner.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

One day left until Thanksgiving break.

Both kids are now off school as of tomorrow. Normally, this would mean that we could sleep in a bit.

Sadly, I appear to have a meeting at 8:30 AM...

It was a lovely, quiet Thanksgiving here. We spent the day relaxing, reading papers, and watching TV.

Black Friday is tomorrow. I intend to skip it. :)

Stuffed!

I ran to the store first thing this morning to pick up the last of what we'd need for Thanksgiving dinner. Then we headed out for lunch and to see "Ralph Wrecks the Internet", which I liked a lot.

Gretchen made a turkey breast for dinner, along with mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, and stuffing. The stuffing was a heavily adulterated version of Trader Joe's Cornbread Stuffing Mix, adding a cup of pecans, a cup of dried cranberries, some sauteed onion and celery, and doubling the amount of butter called for on the package. It was really good that way. :)

The baking of the pumpkin pie has been postponed until Sunday, when I get back from Chambanacon.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Jeff and Carol came by tonight for dinner and a last visit before heading home. Pizza was consumed, videos of small white dogs were viewed, and the conversation was good. :)

Uncle Jeff and Aunt Carol are in town and dropped by for a few hours for lunch with us before heading off to still more Thanksgiving celebrations. They'll be back here on Sunday for the turkey dinner. :) In the meantime, we had sandwiches for lunch and a nice roast for dinner.

I'm heading off to Chambanacon tomorrow, leaving Gretchen and the girls at home until Sunday noonish, when I'll be back for lunch and then off to buy the Christmas tree. In the meantime, since I'm hauling my mixer and the recording computer down there given the amount of music that's going on this year, I figured it was time to pull the updates for the beast.

So far, I have:

  • Uninstalled drivers for M-Audio and Presonus gear that I no longer have
  • Updated the antivirus software
  • Updated Cubase Essentials to the just-released version 9.5 (still in progress)
  • Downloaded some unspecified Windows 10 Update
  • Apparently downloaded some unspecified display driver update
  • Replaced the batteries in the mouse

*sheesh* I should have started sooner...

Jeff and Carol came over for Thanksgiving dinner this evening and we had a wonderful time (and are quite full!). Katie made a Waldorf salad variant at my suggestion, consisting of diced Honeycrisp apples, raisins, pecans (because I thought walnuts would be a bit too bitter for the girls' tastes), vanilla yogurt, and a dusting of cinnamon on top. It was delicious.

Gretchen prepared a turkey breast, using a spice rub on it for the first time, having found a lot of inexpensive fresh rosemary at Trader Joe's on her most recent trip there and that turned out juicy and delicious as well. She also made the cornbread stuffing using the recipe that we've devised over the last few years, plus mashed potatoes and corn pudding.

Oh, and King's Hawaiian rolls. And a salad, because there needed to be something green in this meal.

A good time and good conversation were had by all. :)
