It had been snowing for a while when I headed out to pick up the carryout Chinese for dinner tonight. I've been parking outside so Gretchen can charge the new van (at least until we manage to get the other side of the garage cleaned out), but the driveway just had a bit of slush on it. The car, however, really needed to be cleaned off. I stepped from the driveway onto the grass, moved forward --

And promptly fell down on the very slick grass. Fortunately, I fell well, so there was not a lot of damage, other than to my pride. However, the problem is that I really cannot stand up unassisted from flat ground right now and I *surely* cannot stand up unassisted from very slick flat ground. I sat there for a moment, turning around and getting wetter from the slushy snow, when I realized that I was all of two feet away from my car. I reached for the door handle and realized that was not going to give me sufficient leverage to get up. The side view mirror might work, assuming that I didn't just destroy it in the process.

Or I could just open the door and lever myself up on the arm rest.

Which is what I did. I then *carefully* got the snow brush from the back seat, cleaned off the car, and picked up dinner.

When I got home, I went downstairs, stripped off my sodden jeans that I had changed into that morning, pulled my clean jeans out of the laundry in the dryer, and started a quick load in the washer so that both pairs of jeans would be clean again.

*sigh*

Well, at least I fell in a way that didn't hurt anything.

Happily, the big snow storm went south of us. This disappointed Ruby the Dog, but not me, as I was the one who would have ended up shoveling this mess.

Gretchen and I ran out to Charcoal Delights for lunch today ahead of the not-a-snow-storm up here. As I pulled into the parking lot, I looked at the sign on the door with dismay. Not because they were closed, but because they had posted new hours and were going to be closed on Sunday in the future.

This was a bit of a shock, because we had gone to Charcoal Delights for lunch on Sunday at least two or three or more Sundays every month since we moved to Des Plaines. But they, like many other businesses, are having staffing problems and when that happens, Sunday seems to be what gives.

So we're going to have to find a new place for lunch on Sunday.

Drat!

I am *so* happy that we are on the warm side of this massive storm, because if the rain that had fallen today was snow, I would be shoveling. A lot.

I really need to get the snowblower into the shop. It *might* start, but the priming pump button needs to be replaced. I own the replacement button, but I have also watched the video on how to do this and it looks like a lot more work than I feel like doing in the cold.

Snafu

Gretchen was overdue for fasting blood work due to a previous snafu. After being reminded by our doctor yesterday that this really needed to happen, she scheduled a 10 AM appointment at a nearby Quest lab to get the fasting blood work done.

Because of the really crummy weather, I volunteered to drive and so we piled into my car (which was happily not covered in snow, because the snow had pretty much stopped by the time I got home from shopping last night) and which happily started in the minus 6 degree weather (although the battery asked what the heck I thought I was doing) and headed off for the lab.

As we approached the lab, I noticed that a traffic signal was out and proceeded cautiously through it. (No cross traffic, which was good.) We pulled into the parking lot, Gretchen went to the door...

And discovered that they were closed, because the power was out. Which explains the failed traffic signal.

So we went out for breakfast, since fasting blood work would not be happening.

At 11:03 this morning, Gretchen got a robocall letting her know that her 10 AM appointment had been canceled.

We'll try this again.

After Christmas.

Dog Tired

Ruby the Dog has been having a bit of trouble peeing in the last day or so and Gretchen felt she was lethargic (which I didn't necessarily agree with), but she definitely wasn't eating her kibble (obvious from the contents of her bowl), so we wanted to take her to the vet today. Sadly, our usual vet was all booked up and we really didn't want to wait a week to get her in to be seen, because the peeing problem was concerning, so we ended up taking her to another local vet.

They did a very thorough (and expensive) set of tests and exams and determined that she had some inflammation in her empty intestinal tract and bladder. Ruby came home with me with antibiotics tonight and seemed not at all lethargic about wanting to leave the vet's office.

She was happily eating and drinking tonight, which is very encouraging, and spent a bit of time running around the yard. Not too long, though, because it is bitterly cold up here.

Along with the cold, we got about two inches of snow, which is far less than the one foot Snowmageddon that was in the forecast earlier in the week. Happily, the storm hurried past our area and has gone to dump on someone else.

But the result of all of this was that Gretchen (who had not planned to go out at all today) got to play dog ambulance in the snow. After we got home from picking up Ruby, I went out in my car and collected some more food from Jewel and a new prescription from Walgreens.

Given the cold, that was quite enough.

We -- ok, I -- ended up making a Culver's run this evening to pick up food for the kids. Since my car was out on the driveway and covered in snow/sleet/whatever in a thin crust, I suggested that I wanted to take Gretchen's new van on this mission. She was fine with this, as long as it meant that she didn't have to go.

This gave me an opportunity to drive the van in functional hybrid mode for the first time, since it had been completely discharged on the trip home. It was interesting, but not really any different from having the gasoline engine running full time, which is mostly what I expected. But it was fun watching the little lights on the dash count down...

It's becoming apparent that I'm going to want to get a 240V charger once things sort out. Even sitting overnight won't put a full charge on the van unless it is an extremely long overnight. And what I see is that our overnights are not that long. :)

In other technology news, some time ago I bought a register fan for K's room with the intent of installing it there to improve the air circulation so that the room isn't freezing in winter. Then I couldn't get her to do it. But the weather recently turned cold and the fan was installed by K while I wasn't paying attention. I am told that the room is warmer now, so those of you who wanted to know if this would help can now know that the answer is "Yes".

This is probably a good thing, because the first gas bill of the almost-winter season arrived today and it was annoyingly high. Since it hasn't been that cold yet, I'm thinking that we are going to need to make sure that the doors stay closed, no matter what Ruby the Dog might prefer.

It's October now and we have had several days of gorgeous weather that I have been fortunate enough to get out for a bit in. This has now changed, as the temperature has dropped rapidly and it is raining.

On the other hand, Ruby the Dog enjoyed getting out for her trip to the vet earlier today to get her heartworm shot. And it was *so* nice to do that in good weather as opposed to cold and rainy. :)

I went to the Cubs last night game of the season tonight with a friend from work. After seeing the Cubs score four in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead over the Phillies, I decided that I was just too cold to hang around. My friend concurred, so we headed home.

Arriving home, I got to see the Cubs complete their 4-2 victory on TV, which was much warmer than being there.

Still not warm *enough* though, as Gretchen asked me to go turn on the furnace, which I have now done.

The weather outside isn't particularly frightful. In fact, it's rather pleasant if you're out in it, because although it's cloudy and fairly humid, the temperature has been in the lower seventies (and appears to have fallen below that now).

Unfortunately, the way that modern houses are constructed, the weather *inside* the house with the A/C turned off is hot, humid, and miserable. As a result, I gave up and turned the A/C back on so that the humidity would drop under 70%, which is a level that I apparently no longer care for.

In other news, CD ordering is underway.

We slept with the windows open and the fan on last night, but it was rather heavy out and I certainly could have slept better. Tonight seems to be cooler, so we'll see how things go.

If things don't go better soon, I'll end up turning the A/C back on just to try to drop the humidity.

It got a good bit warmer today than we expected, as the clouds parted and there was a ton of sunshine. Add to that some elevated humidity and it's really not that pleasant in here tonight.

It's supposed to be a lot cooler tomorrow though and I hate to punch up the A/C tonight if we're going to be open again tomorrow. But if it *doesn't* turn cooler tomorrow, the A/C is *so* getting turned back on.
billroper: (Default)
Today is a new day, as they say. Happily, the weather has cooled off to the point where we could turn off the A/C and open up all of the windows, which has helped clear almost all of the remaining skunk smell out of the house. Ruby is no longer a mobile source of skunk scent, which makes *everyone* much happier.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day today. The weather only got better as the day went on and the humidity fell.

Naturally, it was Monday and I was in my office working.

I *did* go out and throw the ball for Ruby the Dog after dinner at least...

With the temperature right around 100 degrees here the last two days, I am extremely thankful for our working air-conditioning unit. Otherwise, I would be hiding in the basement to survive.

It's Hot

Wow! Who turned on July? The thermometer out back was reading 96 degrees earlier today. It *does* tend to run a little high, but a real temperature of 91 with this humidity is fairly miserable and makes me very happy to have air conditioning.

In other news, the arrival of warm weather means that road construction season moves into full swing. The planners have outdone themselves this time. Wolf Road, the major north-south street to our east, is bollixed up due to work at the underpass beneath the C&NW tracks just this side of the traffic circle.

That's ok. Just take Mount Prospect Road, the major north-south street to our west. Except it is down to one lane northbound at the C&NW tracks due to a major reconstruction project (one that is sorely needed, to be honest) that will last all summer.

That's *ok*. I'll just go to Elmhurst Road, the next major north-south street to our west. And as I came back from lunch down Elmhurst Road, I discovered that they have torn up a block of the street just north of the C&NW tracks. Nothing's closed at the moment, but surely they will be putting the ground-up pavement back some time soon. I hope.

Obviously, someone would prefer that we not leave Des Plaines to the north...

I made it back from Marcon. If I counted correctly, the drive home took 6.25 hours, aided by the fact that I had a nice dinner with Trace before heading out, so I didn't need to stop for food. It was a fun con and I got to see and chat with a lot of folks I hadn't seen in a while.

While I was gone, we had a shift in the weather. We went from too darned cold, to opening the door for Ruby today, to turning on the air conditioning tonight in anticipation of a high in the nineties tomorrow.

*sheesh*

It was ridiculously cold for the Cubs / Sox game at Wrigley Field tonight. The temperature started out in the lower 40s, the wind was blowing in at 20 MPH, and there was constant mist blown on the wind to make sure that everything stayed cold and damp. It was not fit conditions to watch a game, which explains the large number of fans who were there disguised as empty seats.

Being slightly crazy, I went to the game.

Being not completely insane, I left after the fourth inning to head home. :)

It is remarkably cold for this point in May. Tomorrow, it is supposed to rain, although it is also supposed to *stop* before I am planning to head out for the Cubs vs. Sox game.

Timing. Timing is everything.

It is *way* too cold to be playing baseball at Wrigley Field tonight.

Or tomorrow night.

The snow visible on the TV screen was a hint.

Snow Joke

The happy news was that the major body of this snowstorm passed to the south of us, so we only got around three to five inches here instead of triple that. The snow blower made short work of it this afternoon when Gretchen went to pick up the kids from school.

Julie would like to learn how to use the snow blower and I would like to encourage this. The timing just wasn't good today. Maybe tomorrow...
