So I needed to upgrade the RAM in my PC here at work, so I headed out to Fry's. This turned out to be a mistake, as I ended up with all the wrong sort of RAM, which I suppose doesn't surprise me.

I have now ordered what looks to be the correct RAM from NewEgg (for about 50% more than the wrong RAM, but words like "ECC" and "registered" tend to add to the cost) and will return the incorrect RAM to Fry's on Friday when I head that way for the WindyCon meeting.

You only want registered RAM if the mainboard requires it, which usually means server-oriented mainboards at or near maximum RAM. The registers make it slower but allow the motherboard to run more memory than it could without them. For a server, this is usually a win.
