So I needed to upgrade the RAM in my PC here at work, so I headed out to Fry's. This turned out to be a mistake, as I ended up with all the wrong sort of RAM, which I suppose doesn't surprise me.

I have now ordered what looks to be the correct RAM from NewEgg (for about 50% more than the wrong RAM, but words like "ECC" and "registered" tend to add to the cost) and will return the incorrect RAM to Fry's on Friday when I head that way for the WindyCon meeting.

I only use ECC if I have a mainboard that supports it. And if I have the choice, I buy mainboards that support it. I don't bother with registered.

I have had ECC hits in the past, so I figure it's worth paying for.

You only want registered RAM if the mainboard requires it, which usually means server-oriented mainboards at or near maximum RAM. The registers make it slower but allow the motherboard to run more memory than it could without them. For a server, this is usually a win.

I will not be at the Windycon meeting. If needed for anything, I should be reachable by cell phone.

When I get ram, I always check the computer first against crucial.com to have the ID it. I have had to get some picky ram over the years.

Hey Bill,
Speaking of computers, did you solve the problem with your recording system? Any chance you will have some tracks for me at Duckon? We reinstalled service pack 3 on our big computer and my M-Audio board finally works with it since the last time we had to remove it and install service pack 2. Everything is working which is a relief. I suspect that M-Audio hadn't updated the drivers for the new service pack. I bought Sue Dream Weaver 4 Premium whcih came with Illustrator which is what we need to do the liners I believe. All is good.

Sounds great Bill and Sue will chat with you re Illustrator at some point. Looking forward to getting your 3 separate tracks so I can mix them in to the rest of the project. Just finished my backing vocals and need to add some other instrumentation but it is coming along well.
