In today's shopping mission, we have acquired a gate for the bottom of the stairs. So far, it's primarily toppled over on top of Katie as she's grabbed at it (it's free-standing, because of the stair configuration), but that's kept her off the stairs without permission.

And it's a very light gate, so only Katie's dignity has been wounded.

Would it help to anchor the gate with twine or bungee cords to the stair posts on either side? You could release one end and swing the gate like .. well, a gate, when you need to.

Just a suggestion.

I have been looking at that myself, but the newel post is on the second stair not the first and the twine would be quite long. This adds yet another element of instability. I'll keep studying the question.
