Katie's developed the habit of grabbing [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise's finger or my thumb, sticking it her mouth and frantically sucking and gumming at it. We're thinking this makes her gums happy, since she doesn't appear to be hungry or want the bottle about this time. The problem has been that we haven't had anything else that's been of the right size for her to stick in her mouth without being in danger of swallowing it.

Gretchen drew upon her own childhood memories today to solve the problem and picked up a fine set of plastic keys on a ring while at the grocery store. And Katie likes them quite a bit.

Which means I can have my thumb back.

It's so much easier to type with thumbs. I hope she wasn't trying to steal your sense of humour, too?

(You have brain sludge, so you'll get the Radioactive Walnut reference.) ;]

Joseph liked the jingle of real keys as well. We solved the problem with a set of metal measuring spoons which we put on a large key-ring. He couldn't choke on them, they jingled, they had no rough edges, and they were cool metal against those unhappy gums. He adored them, and stopped snatching my keys and screaming when I insisted they be returned so I could enter the house or operate the car. Now they're in the kitchen drawer, serving their original purpose, but we still refer to them as "keyspoons".

Darling, your child is teething. ANYTHING she can put in her mouth and chew on will make her happy. My mothers at Baby Clinic had some recommendations last week. I'll canvas them on Tuesday for the name of the product they were talking about.

There's always the ubiquitous water-filled teething rings which lots of kids love after some refrigeration.

She has a few of those. The problem is that she wants something she can get into her mouth and the water-filled toys are just too big. With the keys she can chomp on the shaft, but can't get the whole thing into ger mouth and swallow. She has been enjoying the pink bunny teething ring you gave her, but she is mostly chewing on the ears.
Poor Bunny.

A very stale bagel (dried to the consistency of concrete) works, too, and has a convenient hole by which it can be attached to a stroller or car seat.

I used to know a woman who insisted that in her family, the traditional teething device was a dill pickle .... 86

my grandmother told me to put a couple of used Lipton tea bags into an old baby sock and knot it. The tannin in the tea is supposed to help the inflammation of teething and the texture seemed to help, too. You can refrigerate it to make it cool or use it warm.

You make the cup of tea, and leave the tea bag in until it's lukewarm. keep the teabag and lose the tea; it's too bitter to drink at that point.

Another good one is to take a washcloth, then wet it, and put it in the freezer. Caetlin loved this. Shannon not so much.

Of course the big problem is that no matter what works for one child the another child will hate it.
