I am downloading and installing the latest updates on the recording computer. A bit of investigation indicates that it is twelve years old, which explains why it seems to be slow. The computer in the studio is, if I recall correctly, at least seven years old and being a bit long in the tooth as well.

I foresee new computers in my future, although the current chip shortages may delay that a bit.

(I am looking at the Alder Lake CPUs with a covetous eye, but I am also waiting for the motherboards with built-in Thunderbolt support to show up at a reasonable price. And since I'm using this for recording, not for gaming, I think planning to use the integrated graphics is going to be in order. We'll see.)

ETA: The computer in the basement is ten years old, having been built in spring of 2011. The addition of an SSD and a whole bunch of RAM *has* pepped it up quite a bit. :)

For my newest studio PC I found it much easier to order it from an integrator rather than building it myself, since getting video cards in particular (important as I am trying to expand into video production) is ridiculous on an individual basis. It was a bit more expensive than building it myself would have been, but not extremely so considering the premium I was seeing for reasonable delivery of parts. https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/ were very professional to work with and their tech service is good (we had a really bizarre issue with setting up a RAID array of SSDs that seems unique to the ASUS mobo and chipset combination I was using.)

There's some attraction to that, but I must admit that I don't actually mind putting machines together -- other than some of the fiddly work with the heatsink. And this means that I get to order exactly the parts that I want as opposed to whatever the integrator prefers for their inventory.

Well, assuming that the parts that I want are in stock. :)

But I have a liking for things like Antec cases and I still want an optical drive and...

I may end up moving the video card from the old box to the new one. It's not as old as some of the components.
