We keep accumulating more mail-order tile samples for the bathroom shower project. *Two* big boxes of samples arrived yesterday (along with my new sunglasses, necessitated by the old ones breaking) and with work and all, I didn't try to get them off the porch until after dark. Ruby the Dog was, of course, interested in the open front door as I tried to wrestle the packages in, but that was ok, because she no longer bolts out the front door at any opportunity and I can normally tell her to back up without a problem.

"Normally", however, does not include the situation where Ruby sees a rabbit on the sidewalk. Ruby lit out after the rabbit, the rabbit lit out for cover, and Ruby went running two yards down our side of the street. Great.

But once the rabbit was out of sight and out of mind, Ruby turned around as I called for her and headed back to the house. Well, except for a stop in our front yard to sniff at all of the places where the rabbit had recently been. But eventually she came back in, I could close the front door, and I could stop juggling heavy boxes of tile samples.

We have now examined the tile samples in detail. Today, over lunch with Gretchen, we were able to discuss a fine set of contingency plans for the bathroom depending on:

1) How much of the old tile may be available in the garage.
2) How much damage is done to the existing tile by removing and replacing the old shower pan.
3) How long Gretchen is willing to tolerate having our bathroom (or parts of it) torn up.

I've ordered more tile samples. Tomorrow, I'll look for tile in the garage.

*sigh*

Bath Work

Gretchen and I are considering having the shower in our bathroom rebuilt. This is a project that is something like "The House That Jack Built" or perhaps "Why Paddy's Not At Work Today".

Before the kids were born, we had the bathrooms tiled to replace the fine builder-grade vinyl on the floors and the completely uninteresting white tiles on the walls. We didn't, however, replace any of the glass surrounding the shower, nor the hardware that holds it up. All of that is now more than 25 years old, starting to corrode along the tracks that the shower doors slide on, and becoming progressively more difficult to keep working. I replaced the wheels on the doors a few months back and they improved the situation, but didn't fix it.

We could, of course, replace the metal framing and glass doors around the shower. But whatever new frame that we get is not going to mount into the same holes that have been cut in the existing tile work. And while we have a *few* extra tiles from the original work, we don't have a *lot* of extra tiles to replace all of this with. It is certain that we can't match them.

And we also didn't replace the fine builder-grade plastic shower pan. It too is a whole lot worse for wear.

On the other hand, we *could* just rebuild the whole shower area with a compatible, but contrasting tile, making it look like we actually planned this all when we add the new glass around the shower area. This seems like a trick that might work.

Well, it will work if we can find the right contractor, the right tiles, and the right hardware. We are now shopping around.

I'll let you know what we find. :)

We got far less accomplished than we might have hoped this weekend. On the other hand, I think we're collectively in a better mood, so I'm going to take that as a big plus.

The kitchen reconstruction continues. We have put more things back into place while waiting for the last couple of things to be sorted out. I have ordered a new power strip for the charging shelf, which should work better than any available power strip that we have. In the meantime, the Alexa and the security system have left the family room and gone back to their perches there and look almost like they were meant to be there.

Gretchen also cooked the third (or fourth, depending on whether you could the grilling from two weeks back) meal in the new kitchen, as she made a chicken pot pie with a cornbread crust which was quite tasty. Given the amount of time that the kitchen lay fallow, we keep finding things in the refrigerator that absolutely, positively need to be thrown out, but that's pretty much par for this course. Oh, look! More moldy cheese...

We didn't manage to get the garage cleaned up yet, so I'm still parking outside, but given that Gretchen has been consigned to parking outside for several years, I can hardly complain. We'll get to it.

And the last of my shirts went through the wash, so they are clean and the hamper is empty.

At least until I head off for bed and consign my current shirt there.

Which is next on the agenda.

In other news, we will be watching the season finale of "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" again in the near future. Maybe more than once. :)

We are now in the final phases of the kitchen renovation. There's a small bit of trim and some spackling and touch up painting that needs to be done in areas that used to be covered with tile, but which are no longer so. Also, the phone jack and one outlet need an additional piece of mosaic tile cemented in so that an outlet cover will fit over them, while there's one double switch outlet that needs a tiny bit of tile chiseled out to give us good access to the fourth mounting hole for the switch.

All of the other outlets are now wired up, courtesy of some spacers and longer screws that I picked up at Home Depot, plus a fair amount of patience. This means that we can start to move things back onto most of the kitchen counters.

As we approach the end, I gain a better understanding of asymptotes...

The kitchen is almost done -- just touch-up work remains. And installing the outlet covers, which is going to require some new, longer screws.

I'm working on a project at work that *almost* works. Now, I just need to figure out the almost part.

And the kids played a good game of softball tonight and almost managed to pull it out -- but not quite! Still, they're getting the hang of this and playing better each time out.

It is now *almost* time for bed...

No Marcon this weekend, so for the second consecutive year, I was home for Mother's Day.

Unlike last year, going to a restaurant was an option, so I arranged with Gretchen to arrive at one of our local places just after they opened, thereby beating the rush. It was a lovely lunch.

Back at home, we unpacked several more boxes back into the new cabinets, moving things around as required. There's still more unpacking to do -- and more things that need to leave the house -- but the end is in sight.

The one annoying thing that we've discovered is that the new drawers are a fraction of an inch less deep than the old drawers, which means that some of the things that fit before the renovation will not fit now. But we'll figure it out.

Eventually.

The grout is going in. It turns out that there was not *enough* grout, because when you have tile in this style, it takes a *lot* of grout. So when our contractor left for the day, I went back to the store to get more grout.

Sadly, the store is in the middle of a going out of business sale, the owner of the small chain having decided to retire. Happily, they had the correct grout still in stock.

(It really is a shame that these guys are going away. They had an incredible selection of tile at really good prices.)

Grouting will resume on Monday.

Meanwhile, we took advantage of the state of the kitchen to unpack some more boxes. And we made a pot of chili for dinner, which is the first real meal actually cooked in the new kitchen. Last Sunday, I grilled steaks and we baked potatoes and prepared simple salads, but when the main course comes off the grill outdoors, I don't know if that really counts as "cooking in the new kitchen".

The chili definitely counts. :)

Sealed Up

The sealant went onto the stone sections of the backsplash tile today. That leaves the grouting and a good bit of touch up painting, after which the whole thing should be done.

We are rather looking forward to this. :)

The tile is now up in the kitchen. It still needs to be sealed and grouted, but it is nearly finished.

Then I need to put up the various outlet covers. And the paint touchup needs to be done.

But close. We are very close...

I am embarking on a bit of code rearrangement at work, which -- if I can get it sorted out -- will simplify a lot of things that I need to do. As usual, the devil is in the details, which I am working through now. We'll see how it goes.

Meanwhile, the backsplash tile is going up! And it looks great!

Complexity

Things got mildly complex with our contractor, so he's going to pick up and finish the work starting Monday. In the meantime, we've established that the countertops are sealed, so we're going to pretty much assume that we have full use of the kitchen, other than actually *putting* things on the countertop that aren't going to be removed, since that will get in the way of the painting and tiling.

Now, if we can just figure out where everything is going to go...

In Sync

The plumbers came today and hooked up the sink, the faucet, the garbage disposal, the dishwasher, and the water to the refrigerator. It is *so* nice to have a working sink in the kitchen again!

We still need paint and tile, but this is getting *very* close to being done. :)
billroper: (Default)
The rest of the cabinet handles went in today, along with the countertops. The countertops look great, in our opinion, which is good, because we will be living with them for a long time. :)

Tomorrow, the plumber shows up and hooks the sink, dishwasher, and refrigerator water back up. And there will be paint, shortly to be followed by tile.

And when that is done, we can unpack everything else.
billroper: (Default)
Counters tomorrow! Comedy tonight!

Well, mostly. The subcontractor who was supposed to come back today and install the handles on the cabinets and close up the holes in the end cabinets while they are still easily accessible didn't. I texted the main contractor this evening to let him know and he'll come by tomorrow morning and make sure that (at least) the holes get closed up.

We're looking forward to seeing the countertops, because this particular granite has a lot of variance in the pattern, so we're hoping that things all land correctly. :)

I got up early today, as we had another scrimmage game for K's softball team this morning. It went pretty well. Everyone's still learning the new rules and having a chance to actually *play* under them is a good thing.

The cabinet installers came back today and moved the cabinets to the correct position and installed the crown molding, so that's taken care of. They'll be back on Monday to install the handles and fix the outlet on the island. And then on Tuesday, the countertops should arrive.

I continue to keep my fingers crossed. :)

Scheduling

Apr. 20th, 2021 10:04 pm
billroper: (Default)
We got the heads up yesterday about the upcoming schedule for our kitchen renovation. The cabinet installers will be back on Saturday to finish up all the cabinet bits that need to be done.

The countertops will be installed next Tuesday afternoon.

And that will leave the backsplash tile.

We'll see how everything sorts out.

Gretchen and I were casting about for something different to have for lunch today. I have been craving a good smoked brisket sandwich and my Internet search discovered that a City Barbeque had opened one suburb over in Park Ridge. We headed in that direction and had some nice BBQ for lunch.

I unpacked several more boxes today as we continue to load things back into the in-progress kitchen renovation. I also moved the flattened boxes out into the garage, which has substantially improved the complexion of the family room.

We continue to discuss where things are going to go when they are unpacked. We'd both like to have fewer things on the counter, so this will require some sorting out. But progress is being made!

Got up early today for softball practice. The second half was a scrimmage with one of the other local teams, which was a good learning experience for everyone.

Ordered a new garbage disposal from Home Depot. Went to pick it up and discovered that they had canceled the order, because it was out of stock. They had called the home phone while I was out to tell us this instead of sending an email; then when I went to check status on the email it said that *I* had canceled the order. I suggested -- in my capacity as a customer and a professional programmer -- that the UI for this left something to be desired. I went to check and there were none of this disposal on the shelf, so I ended up buying a more expensive one after determining that I wasn't about to get one cheaper anywhere else. Ah, well.

Yesterday, I checked online and found that the minivan that I have been stalking is back on sale again, the rebates having returned. Gretchen still isn't up for replacing the current minivan, so this was simply a matter of keeping current. In a no-doubt totally unrelated event, last night I dreamed that our current minivan had broken down and was venting steam through the *roof*.

The batteries in the children have completely worn out and they are both asleep as far as I can tell.

Must be time to go to bed. :)

The fellow from the granite company came by today and took measurements for the new countertops. He used a laser measuring device that was fascinating, not just for me, but also for Ruby the Dog, who became very attentive when she saw the red dot. That was the point where I put her outside before she rampaged through the kitchen trying to catch the dot, where she would have possibly destroyed the lovely laser measuring device. So we have now started the clock toward countertops, which is good.

Meanwhile, we had softball practice today. K was still under the weather and didn't make it, but most of the other kids did and we got some good work in, despite the annoying cold.

I was pretty chilled afterwards and Gretchen suggested that I run through the drive-through at one of our local fast-food places and pick up chili and soup. This was a good idea and went pretty well with the leftover roast that we warmed up in the microwave. Later in the evening, we had bagels. Gretchen had to slice them by hand, because the bagel slicer is still among the missing, but I hope to find it soon.

In the process of trying to find the bagel slicer, I found the large bottle of cooking oil and discovered that it is not going to fit on the shelf where I had thought to put it. It's just too tall. I could move the shelf above it up, but that's at one of the big gaps, so I would have to move that shelf up a lot. Overall, it's better not to.

So the oil is going in the pantry. It'll be ok. We'll find it there...

Our contractor came by today and moved the base cabinet to the correct position on the wall. The cabinet crew will come and move the two upper cabinets next week and install the rest of the hardware, at which point those things should be in pretty good shape.

Having the lower cabinets all in the correct location will make it easier when the fellow comes tomorrow to measure for the granite countertops. We'll need to remind him that the refrigerator will *not* be staying flush against one of the lower cabinets, but other than that, things are where they are going to stay.

We will then go into the long night of the kitchen, waiting for the granite fab to be completed. This is supposed to take seven to ten days. It will seem longer. :)

And then there will be the tile work for the backsplash, but that shouldn't take too long, I suspect.

In the meantime, I have been offloading boxes into the upper cabinets that are in the correct position. The problem is *finding* the right boxes, because they are mostly not labeled. So it's open a box, see what's in it, realize that it is not yet a useful box, and try another.

But I got three boxes into the cabinets tonight, which is not bad. And I found the baking cookware for Gretchen to offload into drawers tomorrow, so that will be good too.
