Self-Appraisal Blues

I've now finished my annual self-appraisal and sent it along to my boss. We'll see what he has to say.

I admit that I really don't like the whole self-appraisal process, because it's hard to know exactly what to say in it. So I try for honest.

This is probably better than the extremely candid approach that I've taken on some past occasions. :)

There is a psychological study that shows incompetent people -over- estimating their own abilities and the best people -under- estimating them. Probably because it takes competence to recognize that you're not perfect. Anyway, it seems to me that self-appraisals take advantage of the competent people this way.

We have to do self-appraisals as well. We have a standard form and mine is heavily recycled because what I do, for the most part, is the same year to year. I have a word doc that lists the specifics for each class I work on and I note the new or different stuff. It seems to work, but mostly because the dept head makes it work. I still dread doing the darned things.

We're in the midst of ours as well, for the first time in 3 years. I think I got down the right mix of self-promotion and honest appraisal.

I'm certainly in a better position than my comrade whose biggest "achievement" of the year was getting insulted in a public forum. Although, I think even our department heads agree that successfully getting under the skin of the insulter qualifies as a positive achievement...
