Well, at least we settled the issue of whether or not I'll be doing anything for Chicon 7 tonight.

[livejournal.com profile] shsilver had invited me up to the announcement party at the Westin tonight and told me to go ahead and bring the kids -- incidentally making it possible for [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise to come along. So I figured, why not?

We were having a pleasant conversation with Elaine when Erik got the video running from Australia. (And kudos to Erik for managing the tech.) Unfortunately, the sound was a bit spotty and Julie was initially being a bit loud as we tried to quiet her. One of the committee members with whom I have a bit of history told us we would have to get her to be quiet or take her out. So we got her to be quiet -- at least as quiet as a non-sleeping two-year old ever is. Pretty much the occasional happy toddler noise at a low level. And the same person told us to take her out.

So I erupted. And I grabbed Julie, told the committee member to "F*ck off", and told Gretchen to grab our things.

And we left.

I'm sure it will be a lovely convention. And I'm equally sure that they really don't need me for anything, so I probably don't need to be a source of irritation.

*sigh*

(As Gretchen observed, this particular committee member has a fine history of chattering away during committee meetings and convention panels. I suppose that wouldn't help.)

Ahh, there's the problem! He was worried that Julie was competition. With cause; I'm sure she'd make a better committee member...

As I've told you and Gretchen many times, and I now speak from the position of vice chair, we would be happy to have either one of you (or both of you) in any position that fits your talents, time, and resources.

Congratulations. Good luck with the con. (I need to find out where to convert my membership to attending.)

You can convert at the website or at any convention where we have a presence.

I'm sorry to hear about the unpleasantness, but DAMN it's good to hear there's to be another Chicon. Conga Rats to the bid committee.

That sucks. And blows.

Which is quite an achievement, logistically speaking. Smalls will be Smalls with all the noises and dodgy smells that entails, no amount of tutting or sucked teeth will stop that.

I think you two are doing a great job :-)

I'm sorry you ran into that attitude. I think you may know that sort of thing has happened to many other parents with smalls as well, including us. I'm just sorry that normal toddler burbling is so intolerable to some people in fandom. And my response would have been much the same.

I'm sorry you got that kind of attitude at the announcement meeting - and from someone on or related to the bid committee (which I am/was a member of). I feel ashamed to be associated with someone who is that intolerant of parent issues.

As Steve said - but from someone who is still in an indeterminate place in the convention organization - we'd be happy for any help you can provide - even to the level of advice on topics that you know about.
