Sadly (or happily, depending on your point of view), unplugging the hard disks did nothing to help the situation with [livejournal.com profile] catalana's computer. I checked all of the power connectors, but they seemed to be fine.

So I had a spare video card. It was now time to see what happened if I put it in the machine.

And the machine got better.

Now this is really annoying, because the video card is a five-star, gold-plated, high-frame-rate, gaming monster video card. But it is not a happy camper.

The video card that I put in was a high-end card about three years ago. So it's only a little obsolete. :)

But the computer is working, so I'm going to declare victory.

Yuck. On the plus side, the part should hopefully be covered by warranty, being as new as it is.

Could the additional power consumption of the newer video card be pushing the power supply past the range it is able to provide? (Seems odd the new card failed...)

At least the computer is working. Not broke and don't fix and all that!

It is working in the sense that we can get to some of the functions. Since it's supposed to be a gaming machine, it's not actually working in the "doing what it was designed for" sense. So we will undoubtedly replace the video card in the near future, but at least it's sufficient to take home. It's really unlikely the power consumption is the problem, since we built it with enough to supply the card; it could have been damaged in shipping, but I suspect it's more likely to be the video card. But I'll do some work on it when I get it back to Ohio - [livejournal.com profile] billroper has done enough to get it to the stage that I can take it home and trouble shoot it!
