[livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise took Julie off to the pediatrician for her (delayed) two year checkup. Everything was just fine -- I'm sure Gretchen will give more details on this later. I stayed home with Katie and got some work done, aided by the fact that Katie didn't wake up until after noon. We plan to start doing something about this schedule shortly, but it was awfully helpful today.

When Gretchen got home, I hurried off to my car to grab some lunch. I opened the car door, tossed my newspaper in, and heard the sound of falling glass. What the...?!

The right rear window was shattered at the bottom. Glass was all over the back seat and on the floor of the garage. Glass bits fell at every vibration.

It's a mystery. Apparently, windows just do this sometimes. My insurance is covering it (save for the deductible) and the SafeLite tech is out in the driveway replacing the window now.

But sheesh!

Sometimes heat does it. Or just a sharp point in the frame, or sometimes you just never can figure out what caused it. Tempered glass is hard to break but once it's compromised, it just explodes.

Kind of weird that they charge a deductible for replacing glass. Both of the insurance companies I've been with would replace glass at no charge, even if it just was getting hard to see through or just had too many scratches or a crack in it.

I've had front windshields replaced through AAA and farmers and both charged me a $50 deductible.

Windows do that often, if they're from Microsoft. Otherwise, I wouldn't think so much.

That happened to the secretary's car one place where I worked.

Apparently it is more common in summertime, and that is why I try to remember to leave about a 1/8 to 3/16 inch gap at the top of at least one window when I park my truck this time of year. That size of gap won't let in a damaging amount of rain, should an Afternoon Thundershower pop up, but it WILL let out expanding hot air and hopefully reduce the conditions that lead to spontaneous window dissolution.
