We had a fellow come by and take a look at the roof today. He's of the opinion that there's nothing obvious wrong with it and that there's no reason that it shouldn't last for another five years or so. I thanked him for his honesty and told him we'd keep his card on file.

So now we've called our HVAC guy and he'll be installing an attic fan to blow some of the hot air out which should make the office more livable, since it won't have a furnace on top of it.

Or, at least, he'll do that as soon as he can survive the time in the attic. It'll need to be cooler first...

When you DO get a new roof - consider getting crown vents. We had them put in last year (after our roof was demolished by hail) - and they have made a huge difference in cooling down the upstairs.

When we had my mom's attic ductwork repaired and a fan installed, the HVAC guys showed up at 6:00 a.m. so that they could be done before the attic got intolerably hot.

Of course the ductwork had to be repaired because the last set of roofers simply dropped scrap shingle and plywood on the flexible duct, tearing it all the way through....

I put a fan in our attic a few years back, and it does help. I cut the hole from the outside during the day, got the fan installed, then just waited until evening to do the wiring in the attic. It was still probably 110*F up there but in the middle of the day it would have been more like 140.
