Backing It Up

After having looked at kevinnickerson talking about buying one, I wandered down to Fry's today and found the Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ with two 500 GB drives on sale with a $100 rebate. And I bought it.

Now, I'm backing up my office computer's data to it. We'll see how that goes. :)

Well, the second thing I did after first firing it up and then reading several sections of the manual was to perform a complete reset on it so I could dump the X-RAID software. There are two empty drive bays in the box and if I put a couple of large drives in there, the X-RAID software would happily ignore any part of the drive that was larger than the original 500 MB drives. This seemed silly to me, so I set up RAID 1 on the existing drives and when I add additional drives, I'll mirror them as a new volume.

I'm having trouble getting the backup option on the NAS to talk to my computer, but my computer is happy to backup to the NAS, which is not quite as desirable. On the other hand, it's about time I backed up this box. :)

And I've removed the vagrant underscore.

I'm too lazy to set up a file server (though I've had one before--my power bill likes that I don't have 140W drawn 24/7 any more), I've got my OS drives mirrored (to minimize downtime) and I'm backing up my big disk to alternating external drives. I'd mirror the big disk if I had enough important stuff to warrant it...but I don't.

I might try to set up my NSLU2 again if I get ambitious enough to try and centralize my firefox settings and thunderbird mailboxes...but, like I said, too lazy.

(Time to drag out that external disk and back up my junk again...)
