Today I got an e-mail that says that they're closing the office I work in.

I still have a job, but the closest place to sit is about a 90 minute round trip away from my house.

I think I'm going to be working at home.

Glad the job is staying. And glad they gave you the chance to work from that office when everyone else was folded in to the 90 minute round trip office. Train not an option? Sure, it won't help timewise, but it will let you do useful things during the commute.

The train is an option, but it's a bad option. In order to get trains that run in reasonable time, I have to catch a train by 7:30 AM going downtown and catch one back out by no later that about 5 PM. Since I'm working with folks on the West Coast, that puts me in emphatically the wrong time zone.

The other problem is that the development office is on the wrong side of the Loop from the train station, so you have to catch a shuttle bus. That adds another 20 minutes or half-hour to what would otherwise be a vaguely reasonable commute. It's across the street from the Trump Tower, which is a relatively stupid place to have to commute to.

Well, the customary next step is to give you a boss who doesn't trust people who telecommute. Let's hope they skip that in your case!

Yeah, enough bandwidth, but what does this do to the ping time to your Clearcase server? If I remembered that correctly.

You know, it's interesting. I updated a ClearCase snapshot view from a wireless connection in a hotel in Madison, Wisconsin over the Oracle VPN and it didn't take much longer than it took to update the one on the machine in my office that's hardwired to the network. So it may not be any worse.

It might be better.

Oof. Well, the good news is, that they didn't close the job, too. Telecommuting can/does work. mdonat did it for about 4 years. You gotta leave the work at the work system when you're done.. otherwise you could be working on something that frustrates you at all hours. Trust me.
Hopefully your boss is one of those that is reasonably comfortable with remote workers. Some, just don't. Michelle's last boss wasn't. Oh, well.
