So I got the replacement motherboard from NewEgg and installed everything into the old case last night. This morning, I brought it downstairs to give it a try.

What I had not accounted for was that I'd switched from an AMD chipset to an Intel chipset and that the RAID mirroring on the motherboard isn't quite compatible. When the Intel chipset told me it would wipe out all the data on my old hard disks when I created the mirror, I decided not to take a chance and see if it was lying.

So I now have two new 1.5 TB drives installed in the machine. Once I get everything back together, I'll drop one of the old 400 GB drives into a eSata carrier and punch all of the data onto the new box.

I love technology. :)

Technology can be interesting at times. Recall that I was having problems before Christmas? Well, after much searching and scrambling David gave up and took the system to our local shop. Turned out that somehow most of the chips on the motherboard were blown and a couple of other cards were a bit dodgey. As the repair estimate rose and rose David finally concluded it would be simpler to just buy a newer machine. I'm guessing that a serious power hit must have fried the system although I don't remember one. At least the hard disks were not fried so I should be able to recover all my data. Good thing too as I had not had time to set up the new external drive I got for Christmas that is destined to hold system backups. As things stand at the moment the only backup I have is the RAID mirroring. Once I get the new box I will have a bunch of work to do to get things sorted again.
Computers, they can be so entertaining. :)
