In order to support President Bush by expanding the economy and spend all my money before Senator Kerry can means-test my Social Security, I have bought something that I am sure that [livejournal.com profile] bedlamhouse will approve of:

A new HP laptop.

It replaces a very old laptop that has gotten progressively crankier over the years. And I turned down the CompUSA extended warranty that allows them to discharge their obligation to you by giving you back the warranty fee, despite their protestations that they'd never seen that happen when I pointed to the clause in the contract.

I don't know about the US economy, but every little purchase like this has the potential to improve my economy.

Not directly, of course. However, anyone out there in charge of software development for cellular and wireline value-add services please feel free to purchase lots of HP stuff as well ...

Wow. I knew the extended warranties were a scam, but I had no idea that they had sunk this low.

On the means testing, I will only reference George Will's observation that SS is the 'third rail' of American politics. You touch it and you die.

FWIW, I don't think I've ever heard of that clause being invoked, either. I haven't used it myself but some people at work have. A friend of mine brought a 2-year-old 386 laptop in to them (obviously a few years back) that was pretty much wrecked (dead display) and they gave him store credit for the purchase price, which by that time bought a much nicer laptop, and money left over.

This clause might have been added since then, or their invocation of that clause may have become more frequent. Just one data point though.
