Today on You Wanted To Know, we'll be answering this viewer question: "Which is more painful: having a tooth extracted or having your drivers license renewed?"

Our roving reporter, Bill, was sent to the dentist's office this morning, where he had been told he was going to have a crown replaced. But upon inspecting the tooth, the dentist concluded that it was badly cracked and couldn't be saved, so an immediate extraction was scheduled. To give the tooth extraction a fair chance in this scenario, anesthesia was provided. Shortly thereafter, the tooth was removed in several pieces.

After this, Bill was sent to the Secretary of State facility in Niles, where he waited briefly, had a vision test, paid his $10, had a photo taken, and was issued his new drivers license.

So, Bill, which was more painful?

"Well, I'd say--"

You don't have to clench your teeth.

"Actually, yes, I do. The packing isn't ready to be removed yet."

Ah, ok.

"Both the tooth extraction and the drivers license renewal were relatively painless. However, the anesthesia hasn't worn off yet, so we'll let you know how that goes later. Overall, I think I prefer the drivers license renewal."

And there you have it! The drivers license renewal is less painful than having a tooth extracted.

Tune in next week when we answer the burning question, "What if movie musicals actually did happen in real life?"

Could the painlessness of the license renewal have been lessened by the anesthesia still being in effect?

That was going to be my guess: renewing the license AFTER having the tooth pulled.

For a fair comparison, it should have been a driver's license renewal with Real ID being enforced. Then the tooth would probably have won.

I don't believe the Illinois Assembly has overturned the law they passed which said that Illinois licenses could not be RealID compliant.

My understanding is that some states are partially compliant, but none are 100%.

The last few times I've been to my local Driver Services facility it's been, if not completely annoyance-free, at least less painful than my weekly grocery shopping.

Ow, ow, ow!

I just renewed my DL last week and it was definately less painful than a tooth extraction.

But both on the same day!?!

Ow, ow, ow!!!

I found the tooth extraction was a bit worse. Just did my license renewal by e-mail, and it took about 5 minutes to do. The tooth extraction took longer and the tooth had to be taken out in pieces (originally it was thought it was going to be a root canal).

Regarding the movie musical

I seem to recall that as a segment on Candid Camera long time ago.

The "Once More With Feeling" episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer did a pretty good job with "What if movie musicals actually DID happen in real life?"

Oh, sure, the demon fantasy monsters part of OMWF wouldn't apply - but you had musical numbers dealing with many of the mundane things in life (i.e. parking, "They got the mustard out" and so on).

I had a tooth extracted in January - and next Monday they start the Implant (cut open the gum, drive a titanium screw into the jawbone, close with stitches), so once again for me it's major dental work just before a convention (BayCon). Sigh.

I've never been able to have a tooth extracted unless I go to an oral surgeon and have them put me completly out. And boy, was I loopy after!

Anyway, hugs! What a shitty day!
