There's a Hole in the Bucket

Actually, there appears to be a hole in the top of the crown on my right rear bottom molar. This probably explains how fluid has been getting in underneath the crown, which causes the crown to ride high, which causes the jaw to hurt when I chew, which causes me to poke around the gum to vent the fluid -- fortunately not any sort of infection, just purely a mechanical problem -- which causes the crown to become loose, which is why it just came off again yesterday, which is when I saw the big old hole in the top of the crown, where the porcelain has long since broken away, which is not a great surprise since it cracked when we installed it, probably because the crown was just this much too tall, and...

I have an appointment on Thursday for the dentist to look at it. I'm pretty sure I'm getting a new crown. At least I was able to pop the old crown back in place without a problem. *sigh*

I had a crown replaced recently. It was on a root-canalled tooth, so the dentist was able to do take care of the decay underneath and replace it without novocaine (which I hate). The only real pain was the cost.

On my one crown, the dentist was worrying aloud about taking too much of the tooth to allow for the deep crevasse that my original natural tooth had, so I told her to just leave the metal showing in the middle. It's not as if people are that likely to see the middle of the valley of my molar, after all, unless they're VERY close friends, at which point, they care about me, not my cavities!

So far, that crown has held perfectly.

Sympathy on needing a new crown--they're expensive!

Until that crown is replaced with something sessile, be VERY CAREFUL about chewing and swallowing, even if it's supposedly (temporarily) glued down. I lost a gold crown from that location that way (swallowed with a bite of sandwich). Since it was gold, I tried to recover it, but was unsuccessful.

Umm, if it was too tall and cracked when installed, why didn't the dentist do it right? Why leave it wrong? If the whole problem was theirs in the first place maybe they'll do it free?
