Chuffing Along At Work

I'm making progress on my big project here at work. I've almost got the conversion from the old format for subaccounting to the new format working, but there's one last glitch that I need to sort out. (Until I find the next glitch...) But it's after 6 PM on Friday and I'm really ready to go home.

Except there's that danger that the baby might pop over the weekend, in which case I'd really like the laptop to be up-to-date. This means I have to check in the dozen or so files that I've changed -- at ClearCase's stunningly swift about-one-minute-per-file rate -- and then run the update on the laptop so that it has all the latest changes -- which will probably take another half an hour after that.

If this were a competently designed version control system, I could be home by now...

Chuffing? You have a tiger at work? And you never told me?

Good luck on the impending baby thing.

(For anyone I confused: tigers make a noise called chuffing which is a not-aggressive social thing. It's probably my favorite sound in the world. Not to be confused with the sound of a laboring steam engine.)

I used to use a version-control system called Perforce, and I regularly swore at it because it seemed so complicated to use.

Now I know it could have been much, much worse.

Sadly, work is much more like the laboring steam engine. At least it is when I have to deal with ClearCase.
