Today is tax day in the U.S. We've filed for an extension, as we're still working on the Dodeka taxes, but I've sent a nice check to the government for what I'm going to owe.

It's also exactly two weeks until the due date for Katie's prospective sibling, so we're on alert. Keep your fingers crossed!

(And this means the naming discussion has now moved into high gear, as we'd like to avoid calling the kid "Baby Roper".)

This may just be my ignorance, but I've never quite understood the whole concept of the extension. I mean I get it... you need more time to file your taxes. Yet you have to send in a check for what you owe anyway. At least in my world... the only way I'd know what I owe is by completing my taxes. What am I missing?

We have a tradition of having a couple of names ready and just go with whatever seems appropriate at the moment of filling out the certificate.

How can you name a baby you've never met?

My Kate started out as Lauren... right up until I was writing it on the birth certificate and she just didn't look like a Lauren. And Mike got his middle name while I was filling out the birth certificate (7:30 in the morning and I called and woke Andy up and came up with a name we'd never discussed because we couldn't agree on which one we wanted :). Patrick was either Patrick Gabriel or Gabriel Grant...

So... Good luck...

Is sibling boy or girl, or don't you know?

"Is sibling boy or a girl"? Of course; what else could it be?

Intersex. But they are rare, and get assigned to one gender or another. Happily, the medical community is being convinced to wait to do "corrective" surgery until the child is old enough to decide if zie wants it, and if so, what form of correction zie wants...but in the meantime, a social gender is still assigned at birth, even in the most ambiguous cases. There being no generally accepted pronoun for someone who is in between, or both, or neither, (to say nothing of other difficulties people have with not being able to assign someone to a gender they are comfortable with) that's inevitable.

:-) There's always "zie."

Though I totally agree with you this is not generally accepted in English yet. And while it would probably be good for society in general for people to start getting used to the concept, somehow nobody's comfortable with that when it's *their* beloved child who has to be the skinny edge of the wedge.

Though really it seems to me that gender is pretty much moot until one is near the courting stage. But I'm a wild-eyed progressive :-)

A new addition!!!

Best wishes on both birth and taxes! You could call the kid "Ropelet." Or maybe "Ropeling." Yeah, I like Ropeling.

Ok, someone has to say it

A baby Roper would have to be a Stringer or a Threader.

No, Bill and Gretchen will be the baby ropers...especially since Katie has reached toddler status by now, I believe. :-)

Hm. I wonder if that's how the main character in Dirty Dancing got her name...

"Didn't Simon and Garfunkel have song called 'Baby Roper'?" he asked disengenuously? I feel inspiration coming on...
