It's a TV

Or, at least, I hope it's a TV. I haven't opened it yet.

After disavowing any knowledge of these TVs coming in as of Tuesday, Frys was advertising them again today. I called and was told that they had less than five and more than two, suggesting they might actually have some. So after daisy_knotwise and I met for lunch to see the Hot Dog Island veterans (including the former owner, Jerry, who hadn't realized that we had a little girl and who found Katie quite charming), we went down to Frys.

As it happened, they did have the TV. I produced my rain check, got the set for $100 less than currently advertised, loaded it into the back of the minivan, and sent it home with Gretchen as I headed back to work.

We'll see what it looks like when I unwrap it...

Does this replace the DLP set in the family room, or is it for somewhere else in the house? (And isn't the DLP set HD capable? Or does it not have an HD tuner?)

One of these days we will get an HD compatable TV, but the 27" CRT we bought 7 years ago still works fine, and I can't quite justify dumping it yet (although the new widescreen flatpanel LCDs are sure nice...) For now, however, if I want "the theatre experience", I drag out one of the projectors that does 16x9 (works great for movies, but I wouldn't want to use that setup to watch normal TV, what with the cost of lamps and all).

The old DLP set is HD capable at 720p, while the new set runs at 1080p. The old set has an external HDTV tuner that I've not been using because a set-top antenna won't quite pull in the signal from downtown when operating on the first floor. Since that set is going up to the bedroom, we'll see if it can grab the HD broadcast signal from that location. In either case, the new set has a digital tuner than can decode Comcast's digital cable channels -- at least the ones that aren't scrambled, which includes all of the local HD broadcast channels.
