Today's Rant
Dec. 3rd, 2007 09:46 amWhy is it that many people seem to assume that I don't know what I'm talking about? I concede that there's the possibility that I'm wrong, since I've been known to occasionally be wrong in the past (some days perhaps more than occasionally), and I am certainly open to new data. But in the absence of new data, being told that X is wrong or a waste of time when my experience indicates otherwise simply isn't going to improve my mood.

Date: 2007-12-03 11:32 pm (UTC)I've been dealing with this at the office. There's a senior scary scary smart developer here that's convinced that his network issues are somehow with the motherboard of a Sun workstation... what he's getting on the boot is 'timing out waiting for NIS to come up' Sometimes, he can't connect to the NIS server when he's been running for a while. Now, it's not the /etc files that refer to this networking stuff, because it's been ok before. he's had this problem intermittently for a while. His group uses TONS of bandwidth on the switch/subnet, etc. So, it's not unreasonable to assume that he's getting lots of dropped packets, etc... the network guys come up after the problem goes away, and of course find bupkis!
He's still convinced that it's the system, even after we've tried a different Ethernet card, with a different chipset and drivers. Same problem.
I've been a FE/SSE for over 20 years, with 13 of that being Sun or open systems. I'm a certified Solaris admin, a certified Solaris/unix network admin, etc...
but, because he's a bigshot at the office, with multiple PHD's, etc, he's right and I'm wrong.
My superiors at the office know that I have more than one clue when it comes to stuff like this, and they're pushing back as fast as this dude is pushing forward.
he's working on getting a brand new Sun Workstation and he's probably got enough clout to get one. what's he going to do when it happens again?
RRRRRRRRGHHHHH.......
