Part of yesterday's entertainment was waiting an interminable amount of time in the Sprint PCS store to exchange my new cellphone for a different model. My previous phone was a Samsung and after a few days of using the new Sanyo phone, I realized that I liked the Samsung form factor a bit better. Also, the Sanyo just felt really cheap.

Now I have a brand-new Samsung M510 that can double as an MP3 player. Of course, when it's busy playing MP3s, it won't actually pick up calls, which is a bit of a minus. But I have confirmed that I can get it to play an MP3, by the simple expedient of loading the only MP3 that I had handy on there.

Mich and Marilisa's "Go Home". :)

That means you can probably load MP3s as ring tones, so its still a plus, although on some phones you have to be careful what parameters you give the encoder.

If you wish to make ringtones out of your MP3's I've found that www.phonezoo.com is one of the best places to go. You can upload the song, clip and edit the song to the appropriate 20-30 seconds, and then they convert the song to the proper format for your phone and send it to you via sms.

Bloomin' 'eck, what a piece of rubbish that phone is! [1] Every MP3 playing phone I've owned (and I have two in my pocket at the moment) can not only pick up calls while playing, but you can send and receive texts while the MP3s (or FM radio) continue to play. It's great because the headphones even have a "pick up the call" button on them so if a call comes in while you're listening to music, you can just click on the button and the call replaces the playing MP3 in your earphones (also, certainly on one, possibly on the others, I haven't checked), that same button switches you into voice dialling mode.

I think voice dialling is *so* cool ... I was driving along a long dark road one evening talking to a friend (in the US) on my mobile when I hit a patch of bad reception and the call dropped, I pressed the button, said "Susan" and the phone dialled her number (including my international access number for discount calls) and reconnected us. I suddenly felt like I really was living in the future :-)

[1] Disclaimer, I work for a company that writes mobile phone operating systems for many of the world's major manufacturers :-)

Is it the same phone number as your old one? (Spot the person who isn't used to cell phones - this is probably a dumb question.)
