Can You Hear Me Now?

My venerable Samsung SCH-A660 cellphone decided to misbehave tonight. Apparently, the little rubber cover over the microphone turned to goo and decided to prevent the mic from actually transmitting my voice. I pulled the plug of goo loose and shoved it back in, but it's more like chewing gum than rubber at this point.

Although daisy_knotwise reports that she was actually able to hear what I was saying, so the replaced goo worked better than the way the goo had been in there. And if all else fails, I suppose I can remove the goo, but I'm not sure that the mic will live for a long time with no protection.

We'll see how it behaves.

Can you replicate the grille-shape on a piece of duct tape?

I'd be very worried that the glue on the duct tape would migrate into the mic and kill it for good if I tried that...
