They say that "dog bites man" isn't news, but "man bites dog" is. And it would be news if "squirrel killed by car", but when "car killed by squirrel", well, you just have to take notice.

[livejournal.com profile] ohiblather, please note for your safety. :)

During its last days, my old K-car had a rat living under the hood. Does that count? %]

(It's unlikely, however, that the rat -- no matter how mechanically inclined -- caused a piston rod to fire off like a gun and fatally clip the axle on its way through ...)

I'm trying very hard not to laugh. I mean it's really not funny. But . . .

Well, I was told that the power outage on the Ohio State University campus 2 days ago was due to a squirrel chewing a transformer. I believed it because years ago another squirrel chewed through a transformer on the Michigan State campus, and made me have to study for a final exam by windowlight.

Sometimes they even punch a timeclock...

Several years ago my (then) neighborhood went through a rash of "squirrel meets transformer" events.

Every. Sunday. Morning. At 10:00 am EDT. For almost 2 months.

A resounding boom shakes the neighborhood, and the coffee maker dies.

I am addicted to coffee. Failing to get my Sunday morning fix tends to make me a little anxious...

I now keep a non-electric percolator in the house, just in case. So of course I haven't needed it.

In my new neighborhood, the squirrels favored snack seems to be telephone lines...

Cars and Squirrels don't mix

I once had a squirrel get trapped in my garage. It apparently wound up underneath the hood of the car and panicking, doing considerable damage to the insulation and the wiring, to the point I had the car towed to the dealer for repairs.

When the dealer started the car, everything was working fine, but I told them to look under the hood.

The damage was fixed by the end of the day, and my home owner's insurance covered the repairs!
