Well, it looks like the version control system gleefully lied when it told me that I had checked in all of my changes. Some fraction of three days of work is now gone.

My mood: priceless.

Yes, I did. And I had just backed everything up by checking it into the version control system. However, the system lied, which is egregious cheating.

It was the sudden loss of a hard drive containing both the CVS repository and the source for a (completed, fortunately) project that finally got me off my arse (aside -- why doesn't Firefox's spell checker recognize "arse") and making my own backups on an external USB drive at work.

I have concluded that ClearCase has to be the chattiest version control system known to man.

"Hey, how ya doin'?"

"Doin' great! How about you?"

"Not too bad. Got a file I'd like to check in."

"Really? Are you sure?"

"Pretty sure. Let me check."

"Ok, cool, I'll wait."

"Yeah, that's a file all right."

"Are you sure it's a file?"

"Hang on, I'll check again..."

ClearCase. In this case Remote ClearCase, since I'm no longer sitting close enough to the VOB server to make the regular version of ClearCase an option.
