An Appreciation of the Digital Video Recorder

I have concluded that you don't really appreciate the digital video recorder (DVR) and its ability to timeslip, to jump backward and forward in the stream, and to record for later viewing until you have a small child who screams over the top of important, but very quiet, dialogue.

(1) Don't forget captions. They're a godsend for heavy accents, muttered dialogue or background noise.
(2) I understand. It also is useful for small-but-older children who want to talk and/or ask questions over a TV show. Trust me on this.

G and I got to the point where, if we really cared about the show, we never tried to watch in realtime but always taped it, because watching live was bound to be frustrating. You get mighty fond of skipping over commercials, too.
