The Cubs are apparently poised to hire Lou Piniella as their next manager. Personally, I think that hiring a manager who would rather be managing the New York Yankees is a big mistake, especially since that job will likely be vacant after 2007. We've already seen Piniella pitch a fit to get out of his contract with Tampa Bay; I'll be not at all surprised to see the same thing happen here in a year when Piniella gets tired of losing again.

I don't see why they're hiring him, when he has such a terrible track record. Are they crazy? He can out-whine his players. IMO, the Cubs should wait and hire Joe Torre. The Yankees are nuts.

You'd be further ahead hiring Leon Panetta. At least he would proabbly stay put!

Do the Cubs have any managerial prospects within their own system? I think a club does better if they promote home-grown talent. I may be old-fashioned; but I think athletic clubs benefit from loyalty both in coaches and players.

Oh, and it would be ironic if the Cardinals win the NLCS ... shades of the 1968 World Series!

Well, not really. That was the last non-divisional World Series, and the last one with real "characters" on the teams, IMHO. But then, back in '68 I was just starting college and still young and impressionable.
