On our way back from ConClave, [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise made the observation that I'm an "alpha male". This is not how I normally think of myself.

Hmm...

Huh - I'd love to hear more about the context.

(I do see you as the alpha male in SpaceTime - don't tell Guido - in that I wait for a Lights call from you or Gretchen. But I'd be curious to know more about what Gretchen was getting at.)

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing. I'm most definitely an alpha female and I know it. There are just a lot of matters that I don't see as reflecting on my, umm, alphaness. Which is why I don't fight with all that many people. *grin*

actually...

Bill being the Alpha in Spacetime is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.
As the Alpha in many of the settings in OTHER situations, it's cool to be involved with something where i can hand all the responsible, decision-y stuff to someone else.

Besides, in a herd with multiple alphas, generally the younger ones defer to the older ones....

Yeah, but I like teasing you. *grin*

Actually, I kind of like running lights for y'all for the same reason. I spend so damned much of my time up on stage (either in filking or in the classroom) that it's kind of fun doing behind the scenes stuff.

Of course, you may decide to get fancy with the lights in which case you'll have to give me a crash course in running lights...but that could be fun, too. *grin*

That's not alpha assistance - it's Beta assistance - by supporting the alpha, the beta makes the pack stronger.

Woof.

If you were a buffalo your father would have kicked you out of the herd at puberty. (I don't know when buffalo reach puberty.)

I can probably look that up for you...

Hmmm, for Water Buffalo, it says 18 months. But they seem biased towards wild animals, and most Bison these days are farm raised...

Ah, here we go: 7 to 8 years. But with a life expectancy of only 30, to quote Keynes, "In the long run, we are all dead."

Hmmm... has she seen Christopher Moore's essay on the virtues of Beta Males?

I was gonna say. Hopefully she doesn't just mean that you're not yet in beta.

It's just another way of phrasing what we used to say to you in the 80s.

Actually, I can see it. In any room full of people, patterns develop and in any room you're in, you anchor at least part of the pattern.
