[livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise and I went with my sister, Judy, over to the new church where my brother-in-law, Gary, will be leading his congregation. They're effectively subletting space from the Lutherans rather than building their own church, which makes sense for a variety of moderately complex reasons. Today, the church band was doing their sound check in preparation for their first service in the new space.

The acoustics there are tremendous. Whoever originally designed the church back in 1989 (I'm told) did an excellent job. Once we managed to convince everyone that we needed to turn their monitor feeds down and turn up the mains, the sound was wonderful. I was happy to be able to serve as a spare pair of trained hands as they sorted things out.

Afterwards, we went out to dinner with Judy and Gary. One of the things they just do better in the south is chicken-fried steak. Yum!

Ya gotta remember: J.S. Bach was writing for Lutheran churches, and we still like his music to sound good.

As an individual who grew up in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas (primarily), I'd like to amend your statement to One of the things they just don't do well up here is chicken-fried steak. People in Chicago just don't understand...
