Living in the Future

I am watching high definition video sent back from an experimental spacecraft on my 24 inch computer monitor.

Take *that*, kid who was plotting the Gemini missions on a map in his classroom nearly 60 years ago!

I have that "living in the future" moment every time I consider the computing power of the supercomputer I carry around in my pocket with the computer I learned to program on, or the chip inside of it the size of a potato chip crumb with 50x the mass storage of the roomfull of washing machines that was the fantastically-large (to me at the time) disk system of that computer I learned on.

Weirdly, Apollo 11 was the summer before I started kindergarten, so about the time I started forming an understanding of the wider world. Going to the moon was just something people did, and it was many years later before I started to understand why it's so hard and why it was such a big deal.
