The new computers for the developers and QE guys arrived today. Unfortunately, they were put back in the wrong boxes, so when we grabbed the right box according to the serial number on the list, we were pretty much guaranteed to have taken the wrong machine. Then we found that much of the software that we'd asked to have installed wasn't.

So I'm installing software on the new box now. Very slowly...

Why were they put back into boxes to begin with?

I see - yes, obviously a really efficient thing to do, set up (badly) in California computers that are needed in Chicago...

It's a more common practice than you'd think. At our company all computers are sent to TX for initial configuration and loading the corporate desktop image before being sent to users all over the country where another tech then has to come and apply the local systems and applications necessary.

I've spent most of the last two days installing and configuring software, and copying files, myself. IT gave me a new laptop, and it's definitely a step up in memory and disk capacity, but all they did with the old machine was slip my old hard drive into an external USB-interface case, so I could attach it and copy everything I needed.
