The Mariano's deli case has suffered since the acquisition by Kroger. Now, it has been reduced to a pale shadow of its former glory. When I stopped by to pick up some deli meat for dinner tomorrow, I found that there is almost nothing in the case that isn't either Dietz & Watson (overpriced and not that good) or Private Selection (Kroger's private label). It looks like all of the interesting things that we used to buy are gone, like the Busch summer sausage that Gretchen liked, the Lorraine Swiss cheese that was a staple of our sandwich making, the Vienna Beef pastrami (although the corned beef remains).

It is sad. Makes you look forward to the proposed acquisition going through in the hope that the new Mariano's owners will fix it.

Maybe that's the intention.
