Because [livejournal.com profile] ericcoleman asked for it (over in [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise's journal) and because it was simply too hideous to leave buried in the comments, the following song about the new, rather large desk in our home office:

It's a damned big desk, yes, it's really large
And if it could float, it would be a barge.
It is larger by far
Than the smallest of cars
It's a big desk after all.

It's a big desk after all.
It's a big desk after all.
It's a big desk after all.
It's a damned big desk.

(I suspect you've all sussed out the original tune by now...)

Yes, I've scoped out the original tune. But I'm wondering -- this tune is so well known and so well hated. Why? At least the former? I had never heard it until actually going on the "small world" ride at Disneyland (1976 or early 1977) and have scarcely heard it since -- I think maybe somebody I know has an alarm clock set to that tune, but I'm not sure. (And I do know that a lot of people are resistant to anything they consider trite -- but for me it's a melody that just really, really works. Gee -- maybe I should come up with some words to that melody of my own devising?)

You were lucky

During grade school they made us sing it in just about every school pagent. The year they taught us Alouette they also taught us Small World in French. Same with summer camp, it was sung at just about every bonfire along with Kumbaya.

And I've never been to Disneyland.

I do have a couple counter-songs, depending if I just want to clear my head or if I want to counter-infect the infector.

Being forced to sing "It's A Small World" and "Kumbaya" at summer camp bonfires? That sounds like child abuse to me.

Actually, the problem I have with "Kumbaya" is that right about the time that everyone else has had more than enough of the song, there is inevitably the one jackass who has to come up with One More Verse.

You-are-a-bad-man! ;-)

Now, I'm picturing some version of the Disney ride, where there is office furniture singing your song, instead of the dolls singing the original.

.....I think I need to go home now.....
