Cards Win!

I headed down to Wrigley Field today and saw the Cards beat the Cubs by a final score of 7-2. The game was remarkable for a number of reasons. One was that the Cardinals had things go wrong and didn't implode, which is what they have done for so much of this season, leading to them coming into this series at 10 games under .500. And Steven Matz, who has been awful in most of his starting appearances, managed to get through five innings and earn his first win of the season, while Marcus Stroman, who has been good in most of his starting appearances, wasn't. As in he threw nearly 100 pitches in 3.2 innings and gave up 5 runs, 4 earned.
This wasn't a fast game, finishing in 2:58, but it would have been *much* longer without the pitch clock given the number of pitches that were thrown.
In other news, I have now been to a game this season where Cubs catcher Yan Gomes got two infield hits *and* today's game where he got two triples. This tells you just how entertaining some of the Cardinals fielding was tonight. But despite the two triples and other miscues -- balls getting lost in the lights and the like -- the Cardinals did not implode.
It is much more pleasant when they are not imploding.
