K has a particularly tortured relationship with cellphones. The first cellphone fell out of her pocket and was run over by a car. This was replaced by the second cellphone, which vanished when it was left behind at a restaurant. The *third* cellphone toppled over in the swamp and sank. (Ok, actually, it managed to survive long enough that it stopped being a working phone of its own accord.) The fourth cellphone fell out of her pocket and broke the screen today.

The quoted cost for the screen repair was $150. A new phone (last year's model) from Amazon will cost $129.99 before tax.

Cellphone number five has been ordered. All things considered, I should order a bombproof case for it, but I have been informed that will be more likely to cause it to fall out of her pocket.

At which point, the Maine West Marching Band will probably step on it. Repeatedly.

And that is why my children get cheap phones...

This is why our son only gets Amazon Kids Fire tablets. I think we're on the fourth one. Noting we didn't pay for the second as the warranty actually covers some degree of mishandling. So death by cracked screen due to multiple drops/throws didn't require a new purchase. You don't want to know what happened to the 2nd and 3rd.

A good case should be much less smooth on the outside, making it less likely to slip out of a pocket, unless the real problem is that it never gets all the way into the pocket in the first place. In that case being stickier might leave it even less fully inserted. On the other hand it might force her to pay a tiny bit more attention to really putting it in the pocket, since it would be more noticeable that it wasn't really in.

You can probably get a case that attaches to a chain/cord that attaches to her belt, if she could live with such an arrangement. (I ought to do that myself, come to think about it, but I don't think I could stand it.)

The only times I've broken a phone were ones that didn't have their case yet. I'll never carry one without case and screen protector again.
