I heard a radio report on a recent Kerry campaign appearance which included a clip of Kerry saying that we can't afford to go to the Moon or Mars, because we have problems right here.

Great. We're the richest and most powerful nation on the planet.

If not us, who? If not now, when?

I dunno, you guys. I think it would be tremendous beyond belief to quit this probe-here, satellite-there, here-a-dish, there-a-rover, everywhere-a-barely-functional-station riff they've been playing for decades and actually get out into space. But the "priorities" of our "budget" (I use the terms guardedly) seem to have a lot more to do with shifting money towards The Great Savior Corporations, who promptly tuck it offshore.

We are indeed the richest and most powerful nation on the planet. And now would be a superb time, before we toxify the biosphere past redemption. But we have to actually collect tax money from those who have it to do such things. And, more and more, they're opting out, leaving folks at our level and below to cover the difference.

P.S.: Hi, Bill! I finally got an LJ! :)
