Katie decided that she wanted to pick up another bowed string instrument to go along with the cello that she's learning at school. After some negotiation, we agreed that it would be reasonable to get her a violin to learn to play.

The problem is that I know *nothing* about buying a violin.

The good news is that I have a friend who does. And after a couple of email exchanges, Amy found a *lovely* violin for Katie. We met her in Beloit today for the exchange of hostages. Katie is absolutely delighted.

So many thanks to Amy for her assistance, without which I would still be going "Duh?"

And now to arrange lessons...

Excellent! The violin is not the best singing instrument, but among solo folk instruments (that you don't expect to sing along with), it's a great contender for the top billing -- trivially portable, 3 octave range that's not hard to stretch to 4 (or more if you add an extra string), and great expression/sound variety and pitch-bending.

And I say this only somewhat influenced by it being my primary non-vocal insturment. Good luck on finding her a teacher!
