Gretchen's laptop, which I got for her in June, has what appears to be a total hard drive failure. Happily, it appears to be under warranty, but we'll see how much of a challenge it is to get fixed.

*sigh*

Ugh! I hate those sorts of problems,. Hopefully you get a little lucky on data recovery and its not as bad as thought. (I have a possible HD failure going on a machine I just updated last week and its fortunately about 2 weeks before its going to be heavily needed.)

As dumb as it sounds, have you tried putting the HD onto a external USB adaptor to confirm its a dead drive and not something in the HD interface that failed? I had a machine at work that had a cable that ran $30 fix vs a MB replacement because it would not see the hard drive.

If it's fixable, why do you say it must be destroyed? (Perhaps those horrible Latin tenses are to blame.)
