The third episode of The Orville aired last night.

After we were done watching it, Gretchen turned to me and said (roughly, it was late, so my quote may be a bit off), "That was far more nuanced than I would expect to see on network television."

Um, guys? Against all odds, they are actually doing good SF.

Y'all might consider watching this before it gets cancelled for lack of viewers...

I watched the first three episodes one after another last night. It's amazing how much the show improved over that short span. The first fifteen minutes were almost unbearably bad, but when the third one ended, I said, "That was impressive!"

The allusions to Star Trek were clever and subtle. My favorite line: "We have seat belts." I'm pretty sure one scene was intended as a Galaxy Quest reference, and I liked naming the android Isaac. My favorite character at this point is the doctor.

Still, a Star Trek-class show which is good only when the captain stays off screen has a serious problem, and I don't know how it will overcome it.

I have also been watching the show and am being cautiously optimistic that it gets a decent run. I can agree the show is influenced by the good SF that has come before. One thing that will be to its advantage, is how the new Star Trek series does. (Which is being locked into a CBS only streaming service, vs the big 3, (Amazon, Hulu, Netflix), which I am not willing to pay extra for.)
