A Chance Meeting

After having handed Katie my phone to war drive with it in Ingress yesterday on the way to and from Wrigley Field, I figured it was time to tether her tablet to my phone and head over to the nearby park to give her a more formal introduction to the game. But when we got back from lunch, the neighbor girls who had been out of town for the last week arrived and that plan went kerflooie. So I talked to Gretchen and she said it would be fine if I headed over by myself.

I'd started running the mission there, but had farbled things slightly so that I would have to walk the entire park again in order to catch the missing stations. I figured this would be a good opportunity to knock out the various Enlightened portals in the area, save for the really big ones at the north end. So I took the walk, finished the mission, recharged things, hacked portals, and knocked out a bunch of froggie portals along the way.

As I was knocking out the last of the lower portals, I noticed that someone else was also busy dropping resonators. So I pinged him and thanked him for the help. It turned out that he is a substantially more experienced player, so he offered to meet up with me and hand me some potentially useful items. This meant walking back toward the south end of the park again, but -- what the heck! -- I need the exercise.

We had a nice chat and he showed me some "trophies" from when some massive control fields had been generated in the past. (He's been playing for several years now.)

And then it was time to head back toward home.

By the time I finished, I'd picked up around 50,000 AP, so only another 100,000 to go to make level 6.

And I walked about 5 km, which is not too shabby! :)

I am having fun with the game, too. (I started playing a couple of days ago).

I have found a few portals in my area and hacked a number on the train into NYC last night. (The first portal I happened to get to, happened to be unclaimed, so I got that one as a starting point... Now to capture the 2 open ones near me that I found out about earlier today, but did not have time to capture.

Once you hit level 6, the game gets more fun - L6 bursters can actually do some serious damage to frog portals. You may still have to stand on top of each resonator to destroy the higher level ones, but you can do it - and actually take some of the higher level portals. :-)

So you're saying that my current chances of taking out a level 6 portal are not that good? (I would believe that, but there's one in the neighborhood that I'm considering a major assault on, as the location is a PITB.)

A level 6 portal will probably have 2 L8, 2 L7, and 4 L6 resos. If you're currently stuck using only L5 bursters/ultra strikes, you may not be able to take the portal out on your own (depending on current charge level, any shielding mods on the portal, if the portal is linked to other portal(s), and whether or not the frogs are recharging it while you attack). It would be easier if you had another player with you to help take it out. Failing that, move around the portal and stand on each resonator as you blast away at it - that way, you concentrate the damage done in a way that should help knock each reso off. Ultra strikes (if you have them) concentrate their damage in a smaller area, which should make it easier to take out the portal. You can also use ultra strikes on the very center of the portal (if it is accessible) to take out any mods.

You have nothing to lose but bursters trying to take out higher level portals. The suggestion I made to my co-worker (level 5 currently) is if the resos are at half or below, give it a try. If they're not recharging, you probably can take it if you have enough inventory. She reported taking several portals in the Dells last weekend following this theory.

Awesome!! Sounds like a fun day, and yay for meeting one of the other local players!

I spent yesterday at Indiana Fiddlers Gathering, conveniently held at a park with about 10 portals. Signal was dodgy, but I managed to capture the one ghost and bumped, modded and linked the rest. Then today I met up with friends and we flash farmed a cemetery with about 60 portals back to a standing L8 farm (we had 12 L8 or higher players, so "poof!" and there were L8 portals :-) ). So I'm at inventory cap, and have 700+ L8 bursters, and really need to go blow something up now. :-D

And then there was dinner and general hanging out, and it was a Very Good Day of Ingress.
