If you state that you are in favor of X and work to make X happen, you are not allowed to claim credit for not-X occurring despite your best efforts to get X instead.

I watched the SOTU. There were two things wrong with it. 1) It was just after a con, so I was not drinking. 2) Although I was tempted to drink, I had a cat on my lap and didn't want to disturb him by getting a bottle of wine. Oh, I guess 3) I didn't have a predetermined set of cues as to when I should have taken a drink.
