We have been fighting with weevils in our pantry cabinet for some time. [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise and I thought we had eradicated them, but apparently not. Thus, Gretchen started and I finished cleaning out the infested cabinet with a strong predisposition to "If in doubt, throw it out."

We threw out a lot, including a lot of expired canned goods that had accumulated since the last purge.

The cabinet is now clean and has many vacant spaces on the shelves.

Must be time to go shopping...

Maybe you need a Protection from Weevil spell.

(This is what happens when I stay up way past midnight and post comments on LJ.)

You do know that unless the cans a dented or bulging they don't expire and you likely threw away of lot of perfectly good food that, even if you didn't want it, would have been welcomed by a food bank.

I was the one opening and dumping the cans. Most of that stuff was VERY expired.

Growing up we tended to keep bay leaves in the flour and baking mixes (assuming that they were multiple-use in unsealed containers) to keep weevils at bay. (The pun was unintended, but kept even after I noticed it)

I don't know if it is really effective, or just an old wives tale. But I don't recall finding weevils in any of the protected flour, and occasionally in the unprotected flour.

On the other hand, we always had to be careful not to scoop up the bay leaf when scooping flour - especially for non-savory recipes.
