Hot Java

I spent this afternoon mostly ignoring everything else at work that I might be supposed to be doing so that I could actually attempt to write some Java code for the first time, because the only way to do this is to be able to spend some time to think about it. And now I have.

Leaning heavily on my Google-fu skills and a copy of Bruce Eckel's Thinking In Java, I have learned things about how member variables are initialized in Java (to zero, for the most part), about why I should use ArrayList instead of Vector, about StringBuilder, Java iterators, and all manner of things that start to make a lot more sense when you actually use them to write code.

This is not tremendous progress, but it is a start.

And you can't finish if you don't start.

The language isn't too bad. The problem is the zillion SE and EE classes that they create and update faster than anyone can learn them.

Java 7 was like Harry Potter 7: They split it into two releases because there was too much stuff to fit into one.
