Katie and Julie have been begging for roller skates. Somewhat against my better judgment, I took Katie out to the local sporting goods store tonight to look for them. I got a pair for her (which fit) and a pair for Julie (that were too small when I got them home). We'll swap Julie's pair tomorrow.

They already have helmets. Then we can worry about elbow pads and knee pads...

Come down tothe Lombard Roller Rink some Saturday morning at 11 with the kids; they have fantastic classes for beginners. That's how Mere started out; she's usually there with Susan and her coaches practicing the serious routines she takes to the National and regional competition. (The serious-level coaches frequently teach the beginners, and Mere sometimes sticks around to help!)

This is a good thing. Yes, they need the elbow and knee pads, but they also need to whoosh around outside :)

For the roller skating unit in David's gym class, the teacher didn't have them use knee or elbow pads, but did use wrist guards and bike helmets. The kids tended to try to catch themselves when falling (despite the first lessons, before the skates arrived, was getting on your feet and how to fall), and apparently wrist and lower arm injuries were most common before the wrist guards. This was an inside class, with kids who mostly had never seen skates before. Yes, it was a fun class to help with :-)

I was going to say you should take them to see actual roller derby... then I thought about it again and thought you might be creating little tiny monsters if you did. I can _totally_ see Katie as a jammer and Julie as a blocker...
