Word on the street is that the house three doors down from us where the limo driver used to live has been foreclosed upon. Certainly there's no one living there right now and it looks rather abandoned, although in reasonable shape, other than the fence in the back yard.

Today, workers showed up and moved a huge pile of stuff out of the house and out to the curb. It was impressive. I wandered over to look at it after they'd left.

And the object at the front of the pile was distinctly familiar. It was a 50 inch Samsung DLP HDTV. It may even have been working. The one in our bedroom, the Camel that followed the Camel's Nose -- a new TV stand -- into our house some years ago, is still working just fine.

But seeing it left there made me understand just how obsolete the poor old Camel is. On the other hand, as long as he continues to work properly, there's certainly no reason to replace him.

And someone else seems to have thought something similar, because not much later in the afternoon, a young man and his ten-year-old-or-so son showed up and loaded the alternate Camel from the foreclosed house into their minivan and drove away with it.

I hope it works.

I'm glad the Camel, at least, found a new home.

The waste of throwing so much away disturbs me. And it makes me sad to think of that family having to leave so much behind--it seems like all too often being too poor to pay one bill means losing much more capital (in the sense of stuff you didn't want to give up and won't be able to replace) than you would expect.

A working HDTV may not be as shiny as what you could buy today for $2000, but it hardly deserves to be called "hopelessly obsolete". However, the main thing that troubles me about this post is that your story of the camel and the camel's nose seems to be, by implication, calling your house a tent. I've been to your house. That's no tent.

I have so -much- stuff that was top of the line once, but not any more. It still works, just as well as it ever did. Maybe if I hit the lottery I can replace it with better, but for now, no...
