At [livejournal.com profile] cary_lee's suggestion, I tried listening to 95.9, The River today. I hit the scan button and found the station just as they were playing a commercial that went something like this:

"On our station, we play what we want to hear --"

This was followed by the sound of tuning across stations and

"On our station, we play what you want to hear."

I'd like to think that this commercial started running right after WJMK dumped their oldies format yesterday in favor of "Jack", where they play what they want to hear...

Detroit, which is a ripe radio market, has a wide variety of "Oldie Stations". Some plain old oldies, some very specific ranges.

The lame pop/dance station, WDRQ recently changed formats and became "Doug" FM.. "We Play Everything". And its a pretty weird mix. Beatles, then The Clash, then, Manfred Mann, then Nine Inch Nails, then Blondie.

We're enjoying it

In Atlanta, it's "Dave", who took over from the old "classic rock" station. They even hired some of the old DJs.

Dave. Jack. Doug. It's like Stepford Radio.
