Missed by That Much

The Pentagon's base closing list came out today. Having spent a number of years at Scott AFB down near St. Louis, I was happy to hear that it's not on the list to be closed. In fact, it's supposed to pick up about 800 people.

This kind of thing is always local-pork politics at its worst. Do you remember the time that Congress tried to deal with the problem by basically voting on a base-closing list without seeing it first? I think that was in the Bush I years.

Sounds about right.

According to another article I read in the Tribune, we're having the same problem with closing prisons in Illinois.

The Portsmouth shipyard (which isn't in Portsmouth, and isn't even in the same state as Portsmouth) is listed for the axe. It will be entertaining to hear the local screaming.

Ft. Wainwright, AK (near Fairbanks) closed last round. It's a little disconcerting to know that somewhere you lived just doesn't exist anymore. Poof, it's gone.

I felt the same way when they closed the Joint Typhoon Warning Center at Nimitz Hill on Guam. I think Nimitz Hill is still there, at least.
